This will be a variation on the backpacking trips we've had on Assateague--this time, we'll be going down the island by boat. It will be early in the season, but it also (hopefully) will not be so buggy.

This is a great event if you've already got a kayak or a canoe, but there is an outfitter on the island that rents both for the whole weekend. Participants will need to be prepared for variable weather--and most important, everyone will need to bring ALL of his or her own water (as well as your own food; there won't be group food provided). There are NO fresh water sources on the part of the island where we will be going after the first night (so that means carrying all water...not even filters are good here!). The park service recommends a gallon per person per day (for backpacking). Depending on the carrying capacity of your kayak or canoe, bringing a gallon or more of water should be easy.

The plan will be to stay in the National Park campground the first night, and then paddle to a backcountry site on Saturday where we will stay one night. We will go about 10 miles down the island to the Green Run site. If you have your own kayak, one with some kind of dry storage is ideal.

PLEASE NOTE: This will be a challenging event if you have not done distances such as this before. It is HIGHLY recommended that only experience paddlers sign up for this trip. I will send out some emails to people with more detailed advice about what gear to bring with you once I have an idea of how many people have their own boats.

REMEMBER: Please note whether you need to rent a kayak or canoe in the notes section of your sign up. We will not be able to reserve kayaks/canoes before arriving on the island, but I will try to make sure ahead of time that the outfitter knows we will be coming with a group and will be ready for us.

Required Items to Bring:
- Sturdy sandals, water shoes
- PFD (personal flotation device) if bringing your own boat
- Insect repellant

- See our Canoeing Checklist.
