Itinerary:
Join MOC as we hike a short section of the Standing Stone Trail called the 1000 Steps. Located near Mount Union, PA the steps were built in the 1930s by quarry workers who used the pathway to climb nearly 1,000 feet up Jacks Mountain to start their workday quarrying ganister stone used to make silica bricks. The views from the top of the stairs across the Alleghenies landscape are well worth the effort. After we reach the top of the stairs, we will continue along switch backs & steep rocky sections to the summit of Jacks Mountain. There will be another couple areas along the way with fantastic views. We are hoping to catch the leaves changing color with the timing of this hike. This will be a circuit hike from the top of the stairs for a total hiking distance of just over 9 miles (yes, you get to walk back down the 1000 steps you climbed up).

This is a VERY strenuous hike which has been equated to a “1 hour stair master workout”. Believe me, this hike is more difficult than an hour on the Stair Master. Total elevation gain is 2000 feet.

Drive time is about 3 hours from Baltimore but with 2 organizers, we are able to offer multiple car pool locations. Please indicate in the comments section of your RSVP which car pool location you will be meeting at. Directions to the event will be given at the car pool location. Given the timing, I expect parking near the trail to be at a premium so car pooling is required.
