Itinerary:
This is a moderate to difficult loop through the central district of Shenandoah National Park.

We will be hiking through mid country doing a 10.4 mile loop, with 1800 feet of elevation change, passing by the gorgeous South River Falls. This is the 3rd highest waterfall in the park.

We will loop up along the AT passing by Kites Deadening, and then loop around past the ruins of the Upper Pocosin Mission and the South River cemetery before heading down into the deep, wooded gorge to the base of the South River Falls and finally climbing the trails up passed the top of the falls.

The moderate to difficult rating comes from both the length of the hike and the fact that the major elevation changes occur toward the very end of the hike (when you're at your most worn out).

Despite that though, the scenic rewards are amazing. With the amount of rain, the rivers are high and the waterfall is just incredibly beautiful. There are a few minor stream crossings, though with the rainfall, it might seem like you're walking through rivers on parts of the trail. So waterproof boots/shoes are a good idea.

On the way home, there will be an optional stop at the Prince Michel winery for a wine-tasting. (There were 18 wines tasted when we stopped over after scouting the hike). After the winery, we will stop for food and then head back home.
