This is a fast paced hike. We will be hiking this 11.4 loop in 4 hours. Please sign up only if you have experience hiking over 3.0 mph.

Did you that schloss means “castle” in German? Come see why the German immigrants of Virginia were so impressed with this geologic wonder with the MOC. Described as the treasure of the George Washington National Forest, this 11.4 mile loop is worth the challenge. We will begin this hike at the bottom of the mountain where we will see old-growth hemlocks stand out from the smaller trees growing thick along this stream. If Big Schloss is a destination, this loop hike is an experience.

This trail starts with moderate climb during the first three miles then becomes relatively flat until we start the climb up to the famous outcrop. Please note that the last three miles is a steep downhill, and can be very hard on your knees. We suggest you bring Aleve if you have any problems with your knees.

There will be an optional meal on the way home.
