Itinerary:
Ah, the third Saturday in December – a perfect day to hit the shopping malls. ARE YOU KIDDING? Fighting vast lemming-like hordes in the stores? Playing parking space roulette with ruthless minivan drivers? Waiting endlessly to escape gridlock on your way out of the parking lot? It’s not a pretty picture, my friends. Well, the MOC offers you an alternative -- a combination hike and casual holiday luncheon in northern Frederick County!

First, we’ll do a classic tried & true Maryland day hike. This will be a loop of about 8 miles or so in Catoctin Mountain Park near Thurmont, with a moderate-to-difficult rating. Elevation change is on the order of 1000’ to 1200’. We'll visit Cunningham Falls, Wolf Rock, Hog Rock, and plenty of other rocks.

And after checking out all those rocks in the park, how about a visit to a Stone home? Co-organizer Cindy Stone, that is! (Just so you know, that pun was Cindy’s idea). Anyway, those interested will head over to her house for an informal late lunch. Cindy hasn’t disclosed menu details, but last year’s fare included ham sandwiches, hot chicken-corn soup, salad, munchies, and more. What will we have this year? Come find out! There is no charge for the lunch, though small voluntary contributions to help out will be appreciated.

BEFORE YOU SIGN UP, PLEASE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

First, since we’ll be so close to the holidays, check for any family or travel related schedule conflicts before rushing to register. Although the hike does start early, the event will take up a good portion of the day, especially if you’re joining us at Cindy’s. Consider also what time you’ll need to crawl out of bed that morning to reach Catoctin in time.

Second, bring snacks for the trail to tide yourself over, because the hiking portion will take several hours and the lunch may be as late as mid-afternoon.

Third, those with pet allergies should be aware that Cindy does own two cats.

Fourth, when you register please specify in the notes whether you’re doing both the hike & lunch, or just the hike. Cindy will need a rough headcount.

Fifth, did anyone actually read this far? Incidentally, although there will be no official carpool we will try to work out something unofficially.
