Itinerary:
The hike starts at the Gathland State Park and heads south along the AT. The trail climbs slightly up along the spine of South Mountain where there are several opportunities to view various vista overlooks, the new AT shelter, and old wagon trail from the Civil War. Along this section of the AT is the Caveney Wilderness Memorial and the old cart path from the Civil War (shown on the map as a trail the intersects the AT to Brownsville). There is a new shelter on this trail that is quite impressive since it looks like a log home.

Just before the trail switchbacks sharply to the Potomac River there is a side spur that will lead you down to Weverton Cliff. In total this hike is about 12 miles long with slight elevation changes.
