This is a 21 mile backpacking trip in the Great North Mountain region of the George Washington National Forest. Circumnavigating the Trout Run Valley, this hike is in a quiet area with many vistas. Well meet Friday after work at the carpool location, drive to Wolf Gap Recreation Area, and car-camp. Saturday well hike 11 miles on the Long Mountain Trail, Bucktail Trail, and Bucktrail Connector Trail, camping at Halfmoon Run. Sunday well hike along the Halfmoon Trail, Tuscarora Pond Run Trail, and Mill Mountain Trail, completing the hike to Wolf Gap with a quick detour to the top of Big Schloss.

Since it is hunting season in West Virginia, all participants should wear blaze orange.

Note: There may be a nominal fee for car camping on Friday night

Required Items to Bring:
- Winter backpacking gear (do not bring cotton)
- Blaze orange hat
- Backpack
- Synthetic thermal wicking layers for upper and lower body
- Fleece jacket or wool sweater
- Fleece pants
- Windproof/waterproof jacket
- Windproof/waterproof pants/bibs
- Thick wool or synthetic socks (bring extra)
- Fleece or wool hat
- Insulated, waterproof gloves
- Insulated, waterproof footwear
- Backpacking tent
- Winter sleeping bag
- Sleeping pad
- Stove and fuel (can be shared; must work at low temperatures. Also remember that melting snow can take much gas if its cold)
- At least two fire starting sources (e.g., storm-proof matches and flint)
- Pot
- Headlamp w/extra batteries
- Snacks: powerbars, trailmix
- Dinner: Freeze dried meals or similar
- Breakfast: oatmeal or similar, tea, hot chocolate
- Nalgene bottles
- Collapsible water bottle, 2+ liter (for dry camping)
- Toilet paper
- Plastic whistle
- Extra money for gas

Event Directions:From Baltimore:
Take 95 south to 495 west and then follow directions from D.C.

From D.C.:
Take I66 west towards Front Royal, Merge onto I81 south 17 miles, Exit on VA42 west (exit 283) for 6 miles, In Columbia Furnace right on VA675 and immediately after the creek bridge turn left (Wolf Gap Road VA675) for 6 miles to Wolf Gap Recreation Area. More detailed directions will provided to participants just before the event.
