Please join us for a leisurely kayaking trip exploring the Jug Bay section of the Patuxent River.

Jug Bay is one of the most important freshwater tidal estuaries in the Chesapeake Bay region, and the Patuxent River Park contains expanses of tidal freshwater marsh and riparian forests. Jug Bay has been designated an "Important Birding Area" by the National Audubon Society, and we will likely see great blue herons and osprey, as well as many other animal and plant species.

We'll start off the trip by paddling up the western branch of the Patuxent; the adjacent marshes provide habitat for beaver, muskrat, turtles, and many other species. We'll retrace our route back downriver and stop at the Mount Calvert Plantation site, which has historical and archeological displays, as well as a nice picnic area overlooking the river. We'll end the day by exploring the marshes of Jug Bay and the main branch of the Patuxent River.

$13 for kayak rental. If bringing your own boat, you will need to obtain a "special use" annual permit for each car ($5 for Montgomery and PG County residents, $10 for nonresidents). Please note in the response whether you will be bringing your own kayak or will need to rent a boat from the park.

For more information, visit the Park's website.
