|This weekend-long bike trip will start on Saturday morning at Antietam Creek campground near Sharpsburg, MD, and go about 30 miles along the towpath of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal to a campground (Jordan Junction) just past the town of Williamsport. We then will return by the same route on Sunday. This bike ride is intended for those who would like to train for doing the entire C&O Canal sometime in the future.|
Everyone is expected to bring his or her own gear, food, and camping equipment (although sharing tents is encouraged). People are encouraged to bring light fare with regard to food (since we'll all have limited storage capacity on the ride, communal meals won't be practicable). The canal is well-equipped with potable water sources (they won't win any taste contests, but they're safe and plentiful), so all you'll need to bring is a single modest water container.
|How to Get There:|
|Event Directions:||From DC, take I-270 to Frederick; from Baltimore, take I-70 to Frederick. At Frederick, take US 340 toward Harpers Ferry. Just before going over Potomac before Harpers Ferry, take a left at Keep Tryst Road. Then take first right at Sandy Hook Road. After a couple of miles, road becomes Harpers Ferry Road. Continue on for another 7.5 miles, then take a left on Canal Road. Park in the campground parking area, which does not adjoin the campground itself. You must carry in your gear from the parking lot to the campground.|
