Join the MOC for the famous Key-Chain hike. Burn some holiday calories with a long walk along the mighty Potomac.

The hike will start at the Theodore Roosevelt Island parking lot. The group will meet at the river side (as opposed to island side) of the footbridge onto the Island. We’ll then hoof it to Key Bride and cross into Georgetown. There we'll hook up with the C&O Canal Towpath. We'll then take the towpath north about 4 miles to Chain Bridge where we'll cross back into Virginia.

Turning south, we'll hike along the secluded Potomac Heritage Trail, following it high on the river's bluffs and down along the river's edge, back to Roosevelt Island. Quick history lesson: Captain John Smith explored the area in 1608. George Washington envisioned this part of the Potomac as the beginning of a "great avenue into the Western Country." Quarries, mills, and farms along the Potomac helped create a strong local economy and provided material for the development of Washington, D.C.

Once back on Roosevelt Island, we'll explore the island's monument to Teddy Roosevelt and the 2 ˝ miles of quiet trails.

Total mileage is around 11 miles. The towpath and the trails on Roosevelt Island are very flat and even. The trail portion will have a few ups and downs. Wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes. Much of the PHT is rocky and is muddy and slippery. The hike will go rain or shine, so please use caution in wet weather; high water sometimes covers parts of the trail.

Parking is extremely limited. Carpooling is strongly encouraged and recommended.

Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:The parking lot at Roosevelt Island is only accessible from northbound GW Parkway, thus the long way is given:
From Baltimore:
I-95 south to I-495 WEST
Take Exit 43 and merge onto George Washington Memorial Parkway southbound.
Follow the Parkway past the island and under the Roosevelt Bridge. Exit at Memorial Bridge (just after stone arch), and head toward the Lincoln Memorial. There is a traffic circle just prior to crossing the bridge. Follow the circle 3/4 the way around, and get back on the parkway heading NORTH.
Keep to the right and turn right into the parking lot after about a mile.

From DC:
Take Constitution Ave west. Follow signs to I-66. This will take you across the Roosevelt Bridge. Once on the bridge, get in the right lane and take the very first exit on the far side of the river. The parking area is just beyond the bottom of the ramp. The Island is also convenient to the Rosslyn Metro station.

We'll meet just to the left of the bridge entrance. Parking is EXTREMELY limited so carpooling is strongly encouraged.
