Backpacking Savage River State Forest

We'll backpack in Savage River State Forest in western Maryland

We'll drive there on friday evening, arriving probably at around 10 pm (allowing time to stop for dinner). We'll hike in a bit and pitch tents. Next day we'll set up the shuttle for the 17 miles Big Savage Trail.

On saturday we'll hike at least 8 or 9 miles, maybe more, and camp at a suitable point. We'll complete the trail on sunday.

None of us has been there before. The terrain is described as steep and rocky. We'll study the topos beforehand. Please be sure to bring some cash for any necessary camping permits and to cover gas costs.

Required Items to Bring:
- Backpack
- Backpacking tent (can be shared with another participant) or bivy sac
- Three-seasons sleeping bag
- Sleeping pad
- Synthetic base layer
- Fleece pants and jacket or similar (do not wear cotton)
- Waterproof gear (jacket and pants or poncho)
- Waterproof hiking boots
- Synthetic or wool socks (bring extra pairs)
- Light gloves and hat
- Headlamp and extra batteries
- Stove and fuel
- Cooking pot
- Fire starters (matches, lighter, etc.)
- Non-perishable food for 48 hrs
- Snacks for the trail: powerbars, granola bars, trail mix, peanuts, jerky, dried fruits, etc.
- Suggested breakfast: oatmeal or freeze-dried breakfast
- Suggested dinners: freeze-dried meals, pasta, tuna, etc.
- Water bottles or camelbak: minimum 2-liters capacity total

How to Get There:
Event Directions:From Washington, D.C./Baltimore (Travel time approximately 3 hours):
Take I-70 West to I-68 West. Take exit 22 and follow Chestnut Ridge Road south to New Germany Road. Turn left onto New Germany Road and travel two miles. The entrance is to the forest headquarters is on the right.
