font class=warningYou must pay for the event when you register. If you are mailing a check, please indicate that in the Notes field./font brbr We will arrive at the PATC Blackburn Center on Saturday around noon, drop off our gear, get lunch together, then take off for a short (4-6 mile) moderate out and back hike on the Appalachian Trail northward from the center to burn off our lunch and "stimulate our appetite". You are going to want it because... BRBR ...we are going to learn some basics of Asian cooking together! Master Chef and Clueless Leader Jesse will demonstrate and explain some basic ideas behind cooking simple yet tasty chinese dishes, then we will all cook up a vareity of dishes together for a tasty simple dinner together. BRBR Sunday morning, we'll have a nice breakfast and then arrange a car shuttle to do a longer hike in from Snicker's Gap back to the center (~7 miles with some elevation change and pleasant views), lunch, and then you are free to continue exploring on your own or head home. BRBR The Blackburn Center is a hostel for AT hikers and a multiuse center for the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. It provides a welcome shelter for thru hikers and is known as "the gold standard" on the trail. The Blackburn Trail Center will provide us with bunkbed accomodations and full use of their facilities. Meals are included in the event (and recipes!), and both vegetarian and omniverious options will be available, as will beverages alcoholic and otherwise, though members are encouraged to bring their own as well with perhaps a little share. Please remember that we are sharing the center with hikers and a caretaker family and drink and behave responsibly. brbr Additional info:br a href="" target="_blank"Potomac Appalachain Trail Club/a (our hosts) br a href="" target="_blank"Northern Shenandoah Chapter /a (includes history and information about the Blackburn Trail Center)BR A HREF=""Another recent MOC event at the Blackburn Center/ABR

How to Get There:
Event Directions:FROM BALTIMORE/FREDERICK:br Take I-70 to Frederick, then exit onto US 340 towards Leesburg and Harper's Ferry. Cross the Potomac River into Virginia. brbr At the first traffic light, turn left onto Harper's Ferry Road. Follow this for several miles until the road ends at the intersection on VA 9 (Charleston Road). brbr Turn left on VA 9 and follow it for about half a mile to Cider Mill Road (VA 751). brbr Turn right onto 751. It will loop around to a junction with VA 719 (Woodgrove Road). brbr Turn right onto VA 719 and follow it to VA 713 (Appalachain Trail Road) which will be a sharp right. If you reach the one lane bridge you have gone (just slightly) too far. brbr Turn right onto VA 713 and follow the gravel road all the way to its end at the Blackburn Trail Center. Park in one of the lots midway up the hill rather than at the center if possible. brbr FROM DC/NORTHERN VIRGINIAbr You COULD go up I-270 to Frederick. However, a better route is the following: brbr From DC Beltway take the Dulles Toll Road exit, west. Continue onto the Loudoun County Greenway (65mph here). Follow Greenway to end and exit onto Route 7 west. (stay in left lane) Follow Route 7 west and take first Round Hill exit. In Round Hill turn right by the Amoco gas station and diner onto Main Street. Follow Main Street out of Round Hill. Main Street will now change to Woodgrove Road. Follow Woodgrove Road until you pass over a one lane bridge. After crossing the bridge turn left onto the second road, Appalachian Trail Road. (This is a gravel road). brbr Follow Appalachian Trail Road to sign stating "End of State Maintenance". Turn right onto a dirt road and follow around until you reach a three way split. Take the center road, cross wooden bridge and follow road between two fields. At end of fields the road enters the woods and starts to climb. Come on up the mountain staying on the dirt road following signs for Blackburn. The road ends at the Trail Center. BRBR Parking is not available at the top - please drop off your gear and then park lower down the road. BRBR NOTE: The road is steep in places but in good condition. BRBR PLEASE DO NOT SPEED ON THE GRAVEL ROAD. BRBR
