Sugarloaf Mountain is an oddity, similar to but smaller than Massanutten Mountain further west. It is a solitary mountain that sits in the middle of farmland between the beginning of the Piedmont Plateau and the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is privately owned, and is managed as a nature preserve/public recreation area.
Terrain ranges from hardpack dirt to rocky and rooty. Estimated hiking time is 4 hrs.
As long as Fido is well behaved, he/she is welcome along on this hike.
|How to Get There:|
Directions: from the Capitol Beltway (I495) head north on I270 towards Frederick for 22 miles. Get off at exit 22, turning right onto MD rte 109, and head west for 3 miles, then turn right onto MD95 (Comus Rd) and drive up. Pass the first parking lot at the base of the mountain (outside the main gate), turn into the park and continue on into the park on the service road to the East View parking lot..we will meet and begin the hike here. The gate closes an hour before sunset
Or: use the googlemaps link on the web page description: https://www.g oogle.com/maps? f=q&hl=en&q=39.2605,-77.3903&layer=&ie=UTF8&z=12&ll=39.277713 ,-77.390442&spn=0.11534,0.2314&om=1&iwloc=addr
