Itinerary:

This will be a moderate (distance) to difficult (some elevation change over short distances) hike at Harpers Ferry. We'll go on one of the lesser traveled routes on the heights above the town, this time Loudoun Heights, which are actually on the Virginia side of the Shenandoah/Potomac. We'll walk down from the visitors center and cross back over the bridge and actually go on part of the Appalachian Trail. Then we'll go on a 5-mile loop hike to the two overlooks on Loudoun. We'll go back into town, check out some of the historical spots, and, if folks are up for it, we could have the option of doing a 3-mile or so loop hike up to the overlook on Maryland Heights. Get your hike on and history on all in one day!

I encourage everyone to carpool into the fewest possible cars, since the only reasonable parking in Harpers Ferry is at the National Park visitors center. There is a $10 fee for each vehicle, but with a carpool the damage for each person should be minimal.

Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $18.00 (calculated at total miles (45) * $0.400, effective Thursday, February 21, 2019). This is based on the current gas, maintenance, and other costs of $0.400 per mile as stated by the IRS & Cars.com. This should be divided by the total number of people in the vehicle (incl driver).
For example: With 4 people in the vehicle, the expense per person on this trip would be $4.50. Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.

Additional advice: The cost of your trip is up to your driver. Your cost should not be greater than what is listed above, unless there is extenuating circumstances. If you want to be sure about the cost of the trip, check with your driver before you get into the vehicle. If you are the driver of the vehicle, this is a guideline to what you charge and not a rule.
