This is a moderate to difficult hike of about 12.4 miles from Gathland State Park, or Crampton's Gap, along the Appalachian Trail north to the Reno Monument at Fox Gap. Both of these gaps played a role in the Battle of South Mountain in 1862 (the Reno Monument is named for a Union general who was killed there), which took place several days before the more famous Battle of Antietam. This is an out and back hike, with only modest rise and fall in elevation.
|How to Get There:|
From Baltimore, take I-70 West, or from Washington, take I-270 North, then get on I-70 West at Frederick. After passing Frederick, take exit 49 (Alt 40A), then take a left on Route 40A. Go 40 miles to Middletown, then turn left on MD 17. Go south on MD 17 for 6 miles, then turn right on Gapland Road at Burkittsville. Go one mile, then turn right and then left into parking lot.

Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $34.00 (calculated at total miles (85) * $0.400, effective Sunday, February 17, 2019). This is based on the current gas, maintenance, and other costs of $0.400 per mile as stated by the IRS & Cars.com. This should be divided by the total number of people in the vehicle (incl driver).|
For example: With 4 people in the vehicle, the expense per person on this trip would be $8.50. Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.
Additional advice: The cost of your trip is up to your driver. Your cost should not be greater than what is listed above, unless there is extenuating circumstances. If you want to be sure about the cost of the trip, check with your driver before you get into the vehicle. If you are the driver of the vehicle, this is a guideline to what you charge and not a rule.
