Itinerary:

This 8-9-mile loop hike will take us by Cunningham Falls and all the major overlooks in Catoctin Park: Hog Rock, Blue Ridge, Thurmont Vista, Wolf Rock, and Chimney Rock. This has some significant elevation gains in certain parts, and there is the chance that there might be some snow still on the ground. But hopefully we will have great views all along the trail. Afterwards, we'll stop in Frederick for an early dinner.

Required Items to Bring:

- Good hiking boots

- Water

- Snacks

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

- Some kind of traction device for your shoes, like Yaktrax (if snow is still in the area).

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

Take I-70 West from Baltimore, or I-270 North from Washington. Take or merge onto Route 15 North at Frederick. Thurmont is about 15 miles north. Take exit for MD 806/Catoctin Furnace, then take left on Tippin Road, go about half a mile, then turn left on MD 77. Go about 2.3 miles on 77/Foxville Road, until you reach the visitors center on the right. Pull into parking lot on the right and park near the back.

Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $37.60 (calculated at total miles (94) * $0.400, effective Saturday, February 16, 2019). This is based on the current gas, maintenance, and other costs of $0.400 per mile as stated by the IRS & Cars.com. This should be divided by the total number of people in the vehicle (incl driver).
For example: With 4 people in the vehicle, the expense per person on this trip would be $9.40. Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.

Additional advice: The cost of your trip is up to your driver. Your cost should not be greater than what is listed above, unless there is extenuating circumstances. If you want to be sure about the cost of the trip, check with your driver before you get into the vehicle. If you are the driver of the vehicle, this is a guideline to what you charge and not a rule.
