Hikin’: Join us for a hike through the Gunpowder Falls State Park along Gunpowder River, ending up at Woodhall Winery. This hike will be approximately 4 miles in length, mostly flat but with 3-4 reasonable hills.  The pace will be leisurely, and we expect to complete the trail in ~3 hours.  Suggest poles and an extra pair of shoes for the car, as it can be muddy.

Winin’: For those interested, we will visit Woodhall Winery - a mere 5-minute walk from our cars - for a $15 wine/chocolate-tasting afterwards, for ~2 hours.  Let us know if you'll join us, so we can give Woodhall a head-count for the chocolates.  Bring a sandwich lunch and $15 in cash for the tasting.  For more information about the winery,, 410-357-8644.

Bathrooms: There are no bathrooms at the trailhead, and the winery (with its bathrooms) won’t be open when we arrive.  So if you think you’ll need to use the bathroom before the hike, do so at the last gas station as you drive in.  That gas station is on your left, immediately after you exit off I-83 onto MD-137.  That station has just a singleton bathroom, which tends to have a long line - so allow a good 10-15 minutes to use it.  And don’t forget to buy water or something, so the owners don’t get mad at us for just using their bathroom.

Required Items to Bring:

For the hiking part:

  • Weather-appropriate, clothing (layers are good)
  • Hiking boots
  • Water  (1 quart would be good.)
  • Non-cotton, wool/synthetic socks
  • Cash for carpooling, if you carpool.

For the wine/chocolate-tasting part:

  • Packed lunch
  • More water
  • $15 in cash for the wine tasting, to be paid at the winery.
  • Still something warm to wear, as the tasting room can be nippy.
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
  • Walking sticks or trekking poles, in case of snow or mud
  • Sneakers for wearing after the hike, for comfort and cleanliness (in the winery and in the car)
  • Plastic bag for putting muddy hiking boots in, at the end
  • Camera
  • First Aid Kit
  • Snack (for hike)

From Baltimore:

  • Take I-695 W to Towson.
  • Take exit 24 onto I-83 North toward Timonium/York.
  • Take exit 27 for MD-137 (Mount Carmel Road).
  • At end of exit, turn right, to head eastbound.
  • A gas station (with the last pubic bathroom before the hike) is immediately on your left after you turn onto MD-137.
  • At the end of MD-137, turn left (at the light) onto York Rd (MD -45).
  • Travel 1.6 – 2.0 miles on York Road, go down a steep hill and over small bridge, barely start to go up the next hill, and then turn left at a small sign for “Woodhall Wine Cellars.”  (If you go to the top of that hill, you’ve gone too far.)  Park in the big grassy area that is immediately on your right after you pull in at the Woodhall sign.
  • We’ll meet in that grassy parking area, and walk to the trailhead.
Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):84Mile(s)
Carpool Departure Time: 9:30 am

Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $33.60 (calculated at total miles (84) * $0.400, effective Wednesday, January 23, 2019). This is based on the current gas, maintenance, and other costs of $0.400 per mile as stated by the IRS & This should be divided by the total number of people in the vehicle (incl driver).
For example: With 4 people in the vehicle, the expense per person on this trip would be $8.40. Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.

Additional advice: The cost of your trip is up to your driver. Your cost should not be greater than what is listed above, unless there is extenuating circumstances. If you want to be sure about the cost of the trip, check with your driver before you get into the vehicle. If you are the driver of the vehicle, this is a guideline to what you charge and not a rule.

Weather: If there is heavy rain or significant snow (or lots of pre-existing snow cover), we will cancel the event.

Cancellations: If you sign up and then change your mind, no worries; please just cancel your RSVP by Thursday night, so that waitlisted folks can get on the trip quickly enough to make their weekend plans.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome, as long as they are friendly towards people and other dogs.  If you want to go to the winery afterwards, check with the winery (Woodhall, 410-357-8644) to make sure it’s OK to bring them into the tasting room.  They’ve been dog-friendly in the past, but I don’t know if they are expecting other dogs there that day or not.
