Itinerary:

This is a great day hike through one of this country's best preserved battlefields. This fall has been so mild so far, I'm hoping that the weather will be great even in November. A moderate loop of about 7 to 8 miles, we'll go through the major sites of this battle fought in September 1862 when a Confederate army under Robert E. Lee held off a Union army under George McClellan more than twice its size. Though this will be after the turn of colors and the falling of the leaves, this part of Maryland, between South Mountain in the east and the Potomac valley in the west, is pretty at any time of the year. We'll meet up beforehand at the carpool at 32 and I-70, then make for Sharpsburg for the hike. We will retire to Frederick for some after action refreshment.


Required Items to Bring:

Good hiking shoes, weather appropriate layers for possible rain, water, some snacks, and money for the park rangers for admission to the park.

How to Get There:

From DC, take I-270 North to Frederick and get onto I-70 West; from Baltimore, head west on I-70 West from the city. Past Frederick, take Exit 49 from I-70 West to get onto Rt. 40 (Alternate) toward Middletown. At Boonsboro, turn left at Rt. 34 south, then head 5.5 miles. Turn right into Rt. 65/Church Street. Go about a mile and entrance to the park and visitor center is on the right.

Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $40.00 (calculated at total miles (100) * $0.400, effective Sunday, February 17, 2019). This is based on the current gas, maintenance, and other costs of $0.400 per mile as stated by the IRS & Cars.com. This should be divided by the total number of people in the vehicle (incl driver).
For example: With 4 people in the vehicle, the expense per person on this trip would be $10.00. Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.
