NOTE: This weekend is Labor Day Weekend.  You will be dealing with Ocean City / Maryland beach traffic.

Located near Crisfield on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Janes Island State Park (JISP) offers visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy the beauty and bounty of the Chesapeake Bay. Within the mainland portion of the park are the campground, rental cabins and conference center, picnic areas and pavilions, and the boat ramp and marina.

The island portion of the park – Janes Island – includes over 2,900 acres of saltmarsh, over 30 miles of water trails, and miles of isolated pristine beaches. Although people have harvested the resources of the island for thousands of years, today the island is wild and seemingly untouched. A haven for birds, fish, crabs, and other saltmarsh dwellers, Janes Island provides visitors a tranquil setting to explore the wildlife of the Bay while enjoying the expansive vistas and stunningly beautiful sunsets. Whether fishing or crabbing, motor boating or paddling, or simply relaxing, visitors to Janes Island will experience a world still ruled by the weather, the tides, and the wildlife that first drew people to this very special place.

This trip will be easy going / leisurely.  Kayak experience highly recommended, however if you would like to paddle and need some light instruction, please email the Organizers to find out about availability.

*Subject to change based on actual weather conditions.

FRIDAY: Arrival
SATURDAY: Morning, 2.5-mi round-trip flatwater / touring paddle to beach for lunch & swimming and back; Afternoon, optional jaunt to the nearby Hard Crab Derby ($3/person entrance fee) for dinner at Capt. Tyler's Crab House
SUNDAY: Day flatwater / touring paddle, length can be agreed on in the morning (and we may have options for different length trips)
MONDAY: Departure

If you would like to purchase copies of the Janes Island State Park Water Trail Guide in advance of the trip, please click here to pay with credit card or here to pay by check.  A bandana map is also available for purchase.

VERY Important / Mandatory:

YOU ARE 100% IN CHARGE of supplying your own kayak and gear.  If you do not own a kayak, you must contact the rental company on site at JISP NOW.  DO NOT DELAY THIS.  It is a holiday weekend and RENTALS WILL GO QUICKLY.

Approximately $50/day for solo kayak or $60/day for tandem kayak.  Prepaid deposit (half the rental cost) due at the time of booking.

Contact Billie Chandler to make your kayak reservations:

An email will go out prior to the trip to encourage carpooling with other attendees based on your home / work departure location and time.  An organized carpool will not be offered for this event due to the small size of the group.  But, we HIGHLY encourage carpooling due to limited parking at the campsite.

We are restricted to two tents per site.  To recoop the prepaid camping fees, we have to have at least 3 people, maybe 4 per site.  This may mean that you are sharing a tent.  You are encouraged to find a tent sharing buddy and let us know in the Notes of your registration or a random tent buddy will be assigned for you.

We may end up booking additional campsites if this fills up quickly and they are still available for booking.  It being a holiday weekend, it may be hard to get additional sign up early for this so we can expand the size of the group!

Electricity in the bath houses (with showers).  Water available on site.
