Itinerary:
This Thanksgiving weekend event begins Friday with a day hike up Hawksbill Mt. (tallest peak of A HREF="http://www.nps.gov/shen/home.htm" TARGET="_blank"Shenandoah National Forest/A) for some great views. After the day hike, we’ll be setting up camp at Big Meadows Campground – car camping style. After dinner on Friday night, live entertainment at Skyland Lounge is recommended.BRBR Bright and early Saturday morning, the backpacking portion of the trip begins on a scenic section of the Appalachian Trail. Both Saturday and Sunday’s hikes are about 10 miles in length each, with approximately 500 ft. elevation change. Saturday night’s stay is near a shelter with water. Campfires are allowed at this campsite.BRBR Sunday includes the hike back to the cars, as well as the trip by car back home – with approximate arrival time at 6 PM. Dinner is optional on the road that evening.BRBR This event is for experienced backpackers only, as you’ll need experience walking the distance, and changing elevation while carrying the weight, as well as needing certain supplies.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:From DC, take I-270 towards Frederick, and take 70 W. From Baltimore, take 70 W. Once in Frederick, take Rt. 340 SW towards Charlestown. Stay on Rt. 340 for 62 miles, until Front Royal, VA. Go through Front Royal and take Rt. 522 S for 16 miles. Turn right onto Rt. 211 and follow for another 16 miles, until reaching Shenadoah NP entrance station. Head South onto Skyline drive toward Big Meadows (Central Section). Follow Skyline Drive for 14 miles to Hawksbill Parking. About 2.5 to 3 hrs. of drive time.

Notes:
Due to the mountain elevation at 3000+ ft., and the time of year, everyone will need the proper gear and will be screened over the phone to make sure you understand what you've signed up for.

Cost Includes:$10 gas for carpool driver, $10 park entrance fee, $15 camping fee. This will be paid to the park, carpool driver when you arrive - NOT in advance to the club.
