Work off those Thanksgiving pounds with a brisk hike at Catoctin Mountain. This is a spot so scenic and secluded, FDR chose it for his "Shangri-La" in the 1940s as his retreat from the hustle and bustle of Washington. Today's nearby Camp David doesn't appear on maps, but Catoctin Mountain Park does. We will hike about 8.5 miles in a loop trail that has several overlooks with spectacular views of north-central Maryland.

The trail starts at about 900 feet elevation at the visitor's center and goes up to a maximum of about 1600 feet, so be prepared for some steep trails. On the way up the mountain, we'll go by scenic Cunningham Falls. About midway through, we'll have lunch at Thurmont Vista at 1500 feet, before going on to Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock and then heading back to the visitor's center.
