Experience the steep, rocky slopes of Great North Mountain in the Ridge & Valley Appalachians. This mountain range lies in a rain shadow between the Blue Ridge Mountains and The Allegheny Highlands. The often harsh and dry conditions give rise to an assortment of hardy plant species, including unique wildflowers and prickly pear cactus.

We will be camping at Hawk Campground in the George Washington National Forest near the Virginia-West Virginia border. On Saturday, we will take a 16-mile out and back hike along the underutilized Tuscarora Trail. There is a moderate ascent the first few miles along the western and northern slopes of Great North Mountain and then a fairly level hike along the rocky ridge top along the WV/VA state line. There should be at least moderate spring leaf-out at the campground and some along the ridge top. The ridge section affords decent views throughout its length. We will stop for lunch at the Gerhard Shelter area before reversing. This area was claimed by fire many years ago and supposedly has unobstructed views of both states.

I have relocated the camping to the Wolf Gap Campground a few miles to the south. Unlike Hawk, which has 15 sites and a group camp, Wolf Gap has 9 sites, no group camp, and is generally more popular. I am leaving early Friday morning to secure 3 individual sites to accommodate our group, which I do not expect to be a problem. The sites here are also free, so the trip expense would not change.

The planned hike has also been changed. Instead of a 16 mile out-and-back hike, there will be an 11 to 13 mile horse-shoe shaped shuttle hike with a spur to the overlook at White Rock Cliff. This will also use the originally planned Tuscarora Trail, in part. The shuttle distance is very short. For those who recently experienced the hike to Big Schloss, this hike will cover completely unique territory. If there is interest, people can travel to Big Schloss and/or Tibbet Knob directly from the campground on Sunday morning.

Where Hawk's elevation sat at around 1350', Wolf Gap sits around 2250', so there is likely to be less in the way of spring leaf-out as I anticipate there will be at Hawk due to slightly cooler conditions (although there may be considerable cherry blossoms).

The organizers will either secure the Group Site or 3 individual campsites Friday afternoon. The standard individual site can fit 2 typical 2-man tents. The ultimate group size may be modified prior to registration cut-off in response to registrants planned sleeping arrangements.

You must contact the organizer by email after registering to detail the tent you will bring or whether you need to have one provided to you.
Meals will be provided for Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast. Some snacks will be provided on Friday evening. Please plan your other meals accordingly. The pump water is a bit rusty, so I recommend bringing your own supply if the local water unnerves you. There also are vault toilets.

Please note there will be no official carpool for this event, but we encourage attendees to form their own carpools to get to the event.
