Come join the MOC for a great Cross Country Skiing Event. BONUS - Jerry Wright will be teaching an intro lesson the first hour for those who don't have any experience. So if you have never put a pair of skis on (like me) then Jerry will be helping you get started.

For those needing to rent skis, Ski Rental is $20 (cash only) for the day and includes ski boots, skis, and poles. There is a $4 entrance fee for the New Germany State Park.

Keep in mind that Jerry will be giving an intro lesson for beginners at the start of the event. groups can get back together again after the beginners are ready to start, most likely meeting for hot soup / Lunch at the Rec Center and more skiing after lunch. They really only serve Soup, Snacks, sodas at the Rec Center so you might want to gring a lunch.

I expect we will be skiing for about 5 hours. We need to meet back at the Rec Center at 3pm to start the carpools back to Baltimore (stopping for dinner along the way).

Here are some suggestions for what to bring and wear for XC Skiing:
  • Bring a change of clothes and a small towel for the ride home, you will sweat while skiing.
  • Clothing for skiing should be layers. In these temps, I recommend a light wicking base layer and a lined wind breaker for skiing; parka style works better as your butt is covered - that makes a big difference in heat loss especially after falling on your butt in the snow. Bring a second base layer to wear if you get cold easily; heavier coats are for standing around in the cold.
  • Base layers or shell should be high neck or turtleneck for comfort on the trail; cold wind on exposed necklines is very uncomfortable.
  • Gloves/mittens with a synthetic shell, mittens preferred; fabric hand coverings get wet and hold water.
  • No cotton pants/jeans; synthetic only, windproof best; base layer is optional depending on individual tolerance for cold.
  • Thick socks, synthetic blend or wool if possible.
  • A hat is seriously recommended; ear muff or headband if you don't want a hat.
  • Water
  • Cash for ski rental ($20) and park entrance fee ($4)
There is a changing room in the adjacent building.
