Itinerary:
It's an adventure day! This is a joint event with the Endurance Meetup www.meetup.com/endurance. We'll meet at the Visitor Center parking lot at 1:00 p.m. and start the day with a 8.5 mile hike at Catoctin Mountain Park. View map here: http://www.nps.gov/cato/planyourvisit/upload/8mileL.pdf
This loop is a moderate hike with a few steep inclines. This trail is the longest loop in the Park and features Cunningham Falls, Maryland´┐Żs largest cascading waterfall at 78 feet and five stunning vistas. The Hog Rock Vista is the highest elevation overlook, reaching 1610 ft. We will also visit Blue Ridge Summit, Thurmont Vista, Wolf Rocks (a rock scrambler's paradise) and Chimney Rocks. Our hike will last approximately 5 1/2 hours with short breaks at the highlighted points above and a longer stop for dinner (please pack plenty of water, snacks and dinner). After our day in the great outdoors, be prepared to be truly inspired...

7:00: Banff Mountain Film Festival Tour, Mt. St. Mary's College The Tour showcases award winning short films, which capture the spirit of the outdoors, culture, adventure and the environment with magnificent cinematography. This year's films will include adventure sports such as base jumping, mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking and skiing. I have secured preferred group seating and a group discount ($2 off each ticket= $11/adult, $8/student), and will collect money at the door. The Festival lasts about 3 hours. There is an intermission with great door and raffle prizes. Proceeds benefit the Mt. St. Mary's Outdoor Club. Every year, I look forward to this Festival. The films are unforgettable and you realize there are people out there much crazier (and way more talented) than you can imagine. For more information http://www.chestnutmtnproductions.com/banff/ (Films are listed under the Baltimore location...they still have last year's under the Emmitsburg list). There will be live music between 7:00 - 7:30. The Americana/Bluegrass/Acoustic sounds of The Yardslippers. Check them out at: http://www.myspace.com/theyardslippers

Feel free to join for either just the hike or film festival...just note in your RSVP. This event is open to older children (10+) who can hike 8.5 miles at a comfortable pace (I will be bringing my 12 year old son). FYI - there's usually some language in the films (after all, these are people doing extreme things!)

For Banff Festival only: Directions to Mt. St. Mary's: I-70 West to Frederick. From Frederick get on Rt. 15 North. About 5 miles past the town of Thurmont the University will be on your left; look for directional signs to Knott Auditorium parking (16300 Old Emmitsburg Road, Emmitsburg, MD 21727-7797 ).

Hope to see you there!
