Join us for a leisurely day hike at what is considered by many to be the most well-preserved and beautiful Civil War battlefield park in the country.

In 1862, Antietam was the site of the bloodiest single day in American history, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee staved off destruction at the hands of a much larger Union Army. Union forces carried the field, however, and the resulting victory led directly to the Emancipation Proclamation. Located just miles from the Potomac in west-central Maryland, Antietam has managed to avoid the commercialization of other battlefields such as Gettysburg.

The entire battlefield road tour is approximately 8.5 miles; we will parallel or use the road for most of the way, though we will not hike the entire route. Afterward, we'll stop in Frederick to get something to eat for those so inclined.

Required Items to Bring:
- Good walking shoes
- Water
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
- Sunglasses
- Snacks
- Camera
- Cash for meal in Frederick at the end of the day

How to Get There:
Event Directions:We will meet in front of the park's visitor center. From Baltimore, go west on I-70; from DC, go north on I-270 and then get on I-70 west at Frederick. On I-70, take Exit 49 and take a left after getting off onto Route 40 (Alt). Follow Route 40 west for about 11 miles to Boonsboro, then take a left onto Route 34 (Potomac Street) toward Sharpsburg. Go about 6.5 miles and turn right onto N. Church Street just inside the town of Sharpsburg (you also will see signs for the visitors center). The visitors center will be just ahead on your right.
