|It's Fall. And, it's that time of the year again! Yep, you got it...Punkin Chunkin time!|
It began in 1986 as a group of men sat in a local blacksmith shop arguing over who could throw an anvil farthest. Someone heard some local college students were throwing pumpkins by hand to raise funds for their school. The group embellished that event. Anvils turned to pumpkins and Punkin Chunkin was born.
The first weekend after Halloween, the World Championship Punkin Chunkin in Delaware brings thousands to witness machines that can propel a pumpkin through the air. The objective is to see who, by equipment class (air pressure, centrifuge, catapult, trebuchet, or human power) can propel the pumpkin the furthest.
Join your fellow members of the Maryland Outdoor Club to get into the Fall spirit by camping out the first weekend of November, near the shore in Delaware. We'll camp both Friday and Saturday nights. The campground is centrally located at: 17 miles to the festival (we'll carpool from the campground), 7 to Dogfish Head Brewery, or 10 miles to the Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats. The tent sites are wooded and have access to two bath houses with showers, electric, and heat.
Then, on Saturday, we'll spend a great majority of the day at the annual Punkin Chunkin festival. It starts to get underway around 8 AM, with the competition at 10:30 AM. We'll head over with plenty of time to find parking, walk in, and check out the place before the competition begins.
Optionally, we'll also drive to nearby Milton for a 4 PM tour of the Dogfish Head Brewery and sample their Punkin Ale! We can even have dinner at the Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats restaurant that evening, in Rehoboth, if you'd like. Or, return to the festival for some live music into the evening. I'll poll the group when it gets closer to find out who would like to go to any of these, so I get the appropriate reservations.
Break down on the pricing:
$20 camping/person, payable to organizer on arrival
$9 Punkin Chunkin admission/person
$2 Punkin Chunkin parking/car
FREE Dogfish Head Brewery tour
Average temperature for this weekend is low 60's for a high and low 40's for a low. Please bring plenty of non-cotton, synthetic, wool clothes to keep warm and bundle up at all times!
