This is a fairly tenuous classic hike to the top of Old Rag Mountain, which is arguably the best hike in Shenandoah Park. Old Rag Mountain is one of the highest Peaks (3291 feet) in the Blue Ridge Mountains in northern Virginia. Its bald summit commands a spectacular view of the Piedmont to the east and the Shenandoah Valley to the west.BRBR Our route covers 7.5 miles of ground (2200 feet elevation) including the Ridge Trail, Saddle Trail and Weakley Hollow Fire Road.BRBR The hike begins with a 2 mile ascent to the rocky section of the trail. The last 1.5 mile of the Ridge Trail climb is a fun rock scramble (up and down boulders, through cracks, and on a natural staircase about 1/2 mile from the top), giving you a true summit feeling. We'll break for lunch at the top of the mountain where you'll have spectacular views and it will really make the climb worth it!BRBR Once we're done enjoying our packed lunches, and taking in the view, we'll take the Saddle Trail for 1.5 miles down to the Weakley Hollow Fire Road. From there it is 2.5 miles back to the parking lot.BRBR Please note that you need to be in shape to do this hike! Anyone not physically fit to ascend this mountain will be walked back down the trail to the cars with an Event Co-organizer - no exceptions. Safety first.BRBR The MOC also asks that you leave your mobile phone at home or in your vehicle during the hike.

In this small town, head left at the T-intersection onto 522. Take 522 east just 1 mile, then take 231 south about 7 miles.
