Itinerary:
Gunpowder Falls State Park is a scenic hike through the woods and yet so close to Baltimore. Located in the parking lot closest to Belair Rd, there is a kiosk with a green metal gate to its left. Begin your hike by walking around the green gate and follow a gravel trail to the right. Pass through the tunnel that goes under Belair Road and arrive at the sign welcoming you to the Sweathouse Branch Wildlands Area of the park. A very short distance later you will turn right on the Wildlands Trail (Pink Blazed Trail). About 1.1 miles after starting on the Pink Trail, you arrive at an old woods road. Turn right to stay on the Pink Trail. About .22 miles later you will arrive at a “T” intersection with the Blue Balzed (Stcksdale trail). Turn right and begin following the Blue trail. In .81 miles you pass the Yellow Blazed (Sweethouse Branch Trail**) on your left. Continue straight following the Blue Blazed trail until arriving back at the Gunpowder Falls River. At this point, turn left and follow the river back to the parking lot. This route will take you on a 4.2 mile loop and is mostly a level hike with a couple short hills to climb (about a 300 foot total elevation gain). There will be several stream crossings, but all have decent rocks to use as stepping stones. For more information, visit www.MidatlanticHikes.com – Sweethouse Branch, but your route will be in reverse order to insure you are out of the woods before dark. The Midatlantic Hikes also has a very nice trail map that you can print out and bring along with you.

This is a very well marked trail which is the reason it was chosen for the “self-guided” hike location.

**Option to add distance - Provided there will be enough daylight and the group feels like it, the Yellow Trail (Sweethouse Trail) can be taken. The Yellow trail will loop around and connect back to the Blue Trail along the River.

Event Directions:From both Baltimore and DC:
Take I-95 North
Take exit 64B on the left to merge onto I-695 W toward Towson
Take exit 32B for US-1 N toward Bel Air
Drive 5.2 mi on US-1 and you will see Timber Creek Tavern on Left
Continue across the bridge and turn right into Gunpowder Falls State Park
Park in the Gunpowder Park parking lot.
