Write Up:
I got another low turnout for my Gunpowder hike. It was cold and I submitted the hike on really short notice and there were some pretty good excuses from those who cancelled. So I held my head high and tried not to take it personally.

It's good I trudged on because it was a great hike on a great day. It started out really, really cold but warmed up nicely as we made our way on the trail. The trail was in really good shape. It was only wet or muddy in a couple of spots and there was only ice on a bridge or two.

The people we encountered on the trail were outnumbered by the dogs we met. One couple was on their Sunday morning trail run with three dogs, which were having the time of their doggie lives. Another group walked with their dogs. One of the dogs was a border collie that tried to herd our little group.

We did visit the Prettyboy Dam this trip. It was more majestic than usual because all the dykes were open and water thundered from on high. All the cascading water mixing in the air made the area at the bottom about 10 degrees colder. After shivering for a while, we returned to the Highland Trail.

We made very good time, with only a couple of stops. This did not, however, take away from our enjoyment of the excursion. There was plenty of stark beauty in this winter landscape.

Thanks to those who made it out. You'll be glad to know that I made the Ravens game in plenty of time. It had been moved to 4:00 p.m.
