Write Up:
It was a beautiful, but cold, day for a hike in DC. The ever predictably disfunctional DC metro was yet again disfunctional--with the usual delays on the weekend compounded by single tracking on the red line. In addition, someone to remain unnamed made a mistake about the difference between the meeting time for the event and the meeting time for the car(metro)pool. But in the end we made it off in good time and actually finished the hike--about 8 miles--in under three and quarter hours. We ventured to the site of the only Confederate attack on the city during the Civil War, and also the only spot where a president has come under live fire during a war (Old Abe's stovepipe hat was an inviting target for sharpshooters). It would of course be John Wilkes Booth who finally succeeded in hitting that target, but during the battle, a doctor was shot nearby (a plaque at the fort marks the event).

Some of us decided to take a more leisurely ending to the hike than the others, decided that it was useful to make a loop around lovely UDC and a group of embassies (while others thought it expedient to just head to the Van Ness metro more directly). All in all it was a nice day and a nice hike, and I hope everyone had a good time.
