After a brief delay due to traffic tie-ups on the Beltway, our group of ten was underway, with no further traffic delays to contend with. After riding along the Henson Creek Trail for several miles, we took a look at the earthworks Fort Foote, overlooking the Potomac River. We stopped at Broad Creek Episcopal Church, built in the late 1600s, where one of our participants rang the church bell, disturbing those resting in the cemetery. After a rather long uphill climb, we reached our destination, Fort Washington, where we were treated to an introduction by the park ranger and a personalized demonstration of photography, clothing, and weapons from the Civil War era by reenactor visiting for the weekend. Their passion and willingness to share their knowledge was catching, and we found ourselves learning about things we'd never given much thought - and enjoying the process. Our picnic lunch and the beautiful views of the Potomac and, in the distance, Washington were worthy of our extended stay and numerous photos. We returned along most of the same roads, enjoying more downhill portions on our return, and most of us commemorated our success with a stop at McDonald's. A fun day with people who were interested in enjoying the outdoors and learning about this corner of southern Prince George's County.
