Write Up:
Sandtown families with incomes below the neighborhood median of $10,000 must rent substandard units from absentee landlords, and hundreds of units sit vacant and boarded. In 1989 Habitat for Humanity became aware of the crisis prompting them to create a Habitat specifically for the area. Since then over 200 houses have been completed with pledges to build over 100 more!! Each home is completed at an average cost of $50,000 thanks to the volunteer efforts of the community. On April 12, 2008 10 MOC members had the opportunity to contribute to Sandtown Habitat's success. We worked together with students from the Maryland Pharmacy School clearing four properties preparing them for reconstruction or the opening ceremony. The labor was intense; at one time we were carrying trash cans full of debris over a block to the dumpster.

I had the chance to talk to two Habitat homeowners about the upcoming neighborhood and how their lives have changed. One woman told me how thankful she is to have a place where her grandchildren can come and study without the distractions that are typical in city apartment life. Another man told me he remembered when Sandtown was full of drugs and violence. He admitted that it's still a problem, but he sees improvements every year.

The organizers of this event would like to thank each and every one of you for your hard work and dedication to such an important cause. We know that 8:30am is very early for some people (CHUCK), but everyone showed up willing to do whatever we were asked. Because of your efforts, more children will live in homes that meet all current building codes, and their parents will have the chance to provide a life they were never given.
