Write Up:
This was a substitute hike due to lack of snow cover in western MD. With the weather promising to turn bad in the late afternoon, the hike was shortened to 7 miles so we would be back at the cars before conditions changed. After meeting at the Frederick location, we promptly missed a turn in the local spaghetti bowl highway system. However, we made it to the trail end point on time to meet the outfitter shuttle and piled in for a ride to the start. Temperature was just at freezing on the ridge with the thin remains of sleet and snow mix covering much of the woodland. The trail was crunchy in spots but plenty of sun the day before had cleared the rocks so footing was stable. We visited the 2 story backpacker shelter and stopped for lunch at the Weaverton overlook. We arrived back at the cars just as some light precipitation was beginning to fall. Most of us stopped off at Cindy Dee's for hot chocolate and pie afterwards.
