Write Up:
We had a fine evening for the event after being rescheduled due to the UniverSOUL Circus, which apparently snarled traffic around the park. Our small group was led by two enthusiastic rangers who retrieved their mountain bikes just for us (the other bikes for loan were coaster bikes - one speeds with the brakes that you push the pedal backwards to engage). We traveled on some of the back roads of the park past tennis courts, past the field area undergoing preparations for the next weekend's festival. We visited the pool which used to be used by black people during segregated times - it now serves as a reminder of that era. We skirted the zoo and saw the mansion with its fabulous view of the park, all with a wonderful history and tour by the rangers. Since we were all on mountain or hybrid bikes, we attempted to ride up through the roadbed under construction by the Cylburn Arboretum. Unfortunately, we ran out of time before we could make it all the way to the north end of the park where the alligator ponds used to be. It was a beautiful park, and we completed our ride with a loop around the reservoir. There are talks of using the pond (not the reservoir, though) as an outdoor skating rink in winter, which would put it in a beautiful setting. Sadly, a few weeks after our ride, most of the bikes that were loaned out to visitors were stolen. Some area groups stepped up with some donations of bikes, but it was a shame that the others were stolen. Another reason to help support your local parks!
