Write Up:
While none of us brought our fathers, we did do them proud with our trail maintenance in the Hollofield area of Patapsco, where our original after work hike occurred. Rainstorms and hikers do their damage to the trails, and we helped repair them in order to preserve the area around the trails. We created small humps in the trail to divert water off to the side, preserving the walkway so that users don't go off trail. We also re-routed a section of the trail, but were quickly humbled when our attempts to close off the old section of trail failed and a hiking family pushed past our branch blockade and continued on the old trail. Of course, the rangers, I'm sure, did better markings when they came in and fully closed off the old section. Finally, we cleared a few overhanging branches for those tall hikers (including Jesse). Jerry was a very apt teacher, even providing us with handouts on the standards for trail grading, clearance, etc. This was our first event with Patapsco though we've hiked there often; look for more trail maintenance opportunities as we get into the cooler fall days, or visit Patapsco's own website for opportunities:
