What a beautiful day we had for hiking and tubing!!
12 of us gathered at the Harpers Ferry Visitor center were we had group
introductions, and then took the shuttle bus to the town. Everyone was
talking up a storm and looking forward to the tubing event. But the
organizers wanted everyone to get in a good workout so the group would
fully enjoy the relaxation of the river, and that is exactly what we did.
The hike started off rather easy along the C&O canal where we ran into
an adorably fat little mouse. Everyone in the group gathered around to
admire the wild beast. Our little furry friend did not seem fazed by
us and just kept going about his/her business, so we went about ours.
Once we made it to the trailhead we started our uphill climb, the very
same trail where civil war soldiers had dragged up 10 ton cannons, which
was a something the grouped all admired but thankful not to have
experienced. Our first stop was the Stone Fort, the apex of our hike, which
is where we took a few pictures and then headed downhill rambling
towards the Overlook Cliffs. Once at the Cliffs we took a short break to eat
and take in the amazing views of Harpers Ferry and the confluence of
the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers. A few group members contemplated
rappelling down the mountainside, but since we didn't have the equipment or
a permit, we resigned to leave the same way we came in. We finished our
hike around noon and then headed off to the tubing outfitters.
We regrouped at the outfitters were everyone prepared themselves for
the tubing experience. We were in the water by 1:30 pm where the second
phase of our day began. The water was surprisingly warm and oh so
relaxing! Part of the way down the river we decided to try and stay
together as group by holding on to each other's tubes and the magic cooler
with all the beverages. However, the current and rapids kept fighting us
on our plan. As our drift was winding down, our take out site getting
near, part of the group stopped to relax on the rocks, bask in the sun,
and have a few cold beverages prior to getting out of the water. The
tubing adventure ended just after 4 pm.
Some group members headed home while others opted to extend the day by
eating dinner in downtown Frederick.
Thanks to all who participated and the organizer's hope to make this an
