The weather turned out to be perfect for the Cherry Blossom Parade and Street Festival. The group met-up at the Federal Triangle metro and lined up on Constitution Avenue for the parade. When our stomachs started growling we walked back-up 12th street to sample the fare-there seemed to be an abundance of chicken teriyaki and lo mein. We then wandered up to Pennsylvania Avenue to the main stage to watch the Akasaka Geisha perform. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, as I've visited the Geisha quarters in Kyoto and was not able to see more than a glimpse of one. A few of the group stayed on to watch the Nendaiko group performance, which was also a treat, then joined the rest of the group at the Beer Garden for a brief spell. We then stopped in on the Okinawan performance on our way to see the post-bloom cherry trees. Happily, we were able to get a photo of a few trees in bloom, then walked around the tidal basin to the Jefferson Memorial. Back on 12th street we were hungry again, so we sampled taiyaki (in this case, a pastry in the shape of a Thai fish filled with sweetened azuki bean paste-really better tasting than it sounds) and unagi-donburi (fresh-water eel teriyaki over rice). And back to the Biru-Gaaden. The event ran over the scheduled time and would have continued had it not started to rain. We parted ways, and the carpoolers took the scenic route back to Greenbelt where we dined at the oh-so-American Silver Diner before calling it a day. A good time was had by all and I will definitely do this again next year, we still didn't see all there was to see!
