Write Up:
Nine MOC members participated in the trip. All met at the Vienna, VA carpool location at ~8am Saturday morning and arrived at the trailhead, near New Market Gap, VA, by ~10am. Due to fire road access closure, the original route plan was modified accordingly. The trailhead was redesignated to the intersection of VA Rt. 211 and a fire road through Duncan Hollow that junctioned with the WKML at the base of Waterfall Mountain Trail. The WKML was hiked clockwise from this junction.

The loop began with a climb up the ~20% grade of Waterfalls Mtn. Trail for about one mile. We hiked the rest of the day north along the Massanutten West trail to the Jawbone Gap trail interconnect and then east on the Gap Creek Trail. At the end of this strenuous day covering over nine miles, we camped by a well flowing stream in Duncan Hollow at the bottom of Peach Orchard Gap. A participant brought refreshments for all to enjoy at the end of this tough day. A camp fire was built in an existing fire ring. Morning rain showers this day made way for a warm & sunny afternoon, and a mild evening. Early morning termperatures dropped to the upper 30ís.

On the second day, we hiked another six miles along the Duncan Hollow Trail to the base of Waterfall Mtn Trail, completing the WKML. We hiked out along the Duncan Hollow fire road, and arrived back at the cars in the early afternoon. and stopped for a meal at a restaurant in Woodstock, VA. Weather on this day was clear, dry, and unseasonably warm.

Overall, our backpack trip was physically challenging, as advertised, but safe and successful. This route plan is well suited for intermediate to advanced backpackers. An excellent time was had by all.
