Write Up:
This day was appropriately frigid (though there was no snow to match the temperature). I suggested that participants might want to try taking off their shoes and socks, ripping their pants, and then tying some rags around their feet to get the full "feel" of the Valley Forge experience--but there were no takers. Much of the time on the trail was consumed with talk of the hot soup that was served by the ladies of the Washington Memorial Chapel (once we actually got there, however, I don't recall anyone actually getting soup). There was lots of careful stepping during one long stretch along the ice-frosted trail along the Valley Creek, but everyone managed to survive to hear the story of George Washington's headquarters as told by a man in a tri-corn hat. We also learned that when it comes to the perennial battle between automobiles and pedestrians, the Maryland Outdoor Club's hikers have a decent chance of beating our four-wheeled nemeses when given a fair chance.
