First of all, a BIG shout out goes to Sarah Tinney, who, on Wednesday, braved strange, drunken woodsmen, irate hunters, and awful weather with me to scout the hike. Thanks, girl - you rock.
We woke to beautiful weather on Sunday and met at the Vienna Metro Station at 8:15. The group was met by event coordinators with "trail prizes": a baggie consisting of trail maps, trail notes, and candy. From Vienna, we drove to the trail head, 1.5 hours away.
The group spent the gorgeous, sunny day hiking, listening to Michael (you can hear him anywhere within a ten mile radius) chat about Dr. Phil and his favorite Lifetime Channel shows (yeah, Michael, thats for the chicken sounds..), learning about trail maintenance from Jerry, and watching Sarven eat multiple (many multiple...) sandwiches. Stacia, rather unsuccessfully, tried to rid her pack of stale peanut poundage (long story).
We all enjoyed consistent views from the ridges (due to lack of foliage) and rested at the magnificent top of Big Schloss.
On the way back to the car, we studied the ancient redneck remains strewn along the fire road. Michael is now planning a PhD thesis on the topic.
Most of us enjoyed a dinner at The Italian Touch restaurant in Woodstock after the hike. Everyone seemed to have a great time - I hope to make this a little backpacking trip when the weather warms.
