It was a beautiful day, and the community center had agreed to let us use their facility when they were usually closed. We all made our introductions and what our previous first aid experience and background was, as well as what our goals to get from the class were.
After an inital opening discussion on the difference between wilderness first aid and standard first aid, the key elements of time and access to help were covered.
Jason then had a "victim" simulate that he was injured and showed how important scene assessment was to prevent a would-be rescuer from being hurt themselves. After that, the ABC's (Airway, Breathing, and Circulation) were discussed, explained and demonstrated with the members using these prinicples on each other. The top ten wilderness emergencies were explained. Resources and items for keeping in your pack were given. Shock, sprains, strains, snake/insect bites, environmental emergencies were discussed and demonstrated.
