Write Up:
On a beautiful Easter Sunday morning 17 MOCers gathered at Frederick in preparation for our hike. We met at Burger King on Route 40 West, but strategic location rather than cuisine offerings was the primary criterion for selection of this rendezvous point.

Once we assembled and introductions had been made, the group carpooled about five miles to the trailhead parking lot at Gambrill State Park. The hiking route began with a slight descent to a portion of the Catoctin Trail, at which point we began to ascend the eastern face of High Knob's ridge. After a time we left the northbound Catoctin Trail (which ultimately runs as far as Catoctin Park near Thurmont) and continued instead on Gambrill's longest self-contained trail. By the half way point of our trek most of the uphill was behind us, the trail crossed the main park road, and we began to loop back toward the south.

As we approached the final leg of our trek, we experienced an unintentional variation on a tried and true Easter tradition: the Easter Egg Hunt. There were two main differences, however. First, it was completely unplanned, and second, it was more of an Easter Hiker Hunt. Our crew had become somewhat strung out with a group of faster hikers outpacing those toward the rear. To make a long story short, we became separated into two groups on two different trails, but cool heads prevailed all the way around and everyone was soon reunited after a modest delay at the High Knob Picnic Area.

From the picnic area we enjoyed impressive views of Frederick and the Middletown Valley from stone overlooks, then enjoyed a snack or two while lounging at tables in an unused pavilion. After a short time we left the picnic area for the final walk of perhaps a quarter mile back to our cars at the trailhead parking area.

Thanks to all who came out to enjoy the great weather and hike with us!
