I would like to thank all the participants for coming out. I believe that we had a good time. It was around twelve degrees when we met at the Vienna Metro station parking lot. Just before we were about to leave, I received a phone call from Kate. She had taken a cab from Washington D.C. and wasn't sure where we were. It didn't take long to guide her and we left shortly thereafter. Even though there was a big snowfall the previous week, we didn't see any signs of it while driving to the trail head. We did some stretching and saw White Rocks, the first overlook, 1,200 feet above us. As we gained elevation, we discovered little patches of snow. We almost missed the turn to get to White Rocks. We scrambled over rocks and through bushes but the view was worth the effort. It was good to take a break after the climb, take pictures, and have a snack. Along the tops of the mountains, in the 2,600-3,200 feet range, we hiked in a couple inches of snow. There were a couple of slips and falls but thankfully nobody got hurt. Taking a side trail, we went to a smaller overlook and saw our destination, Halfmoon Mountain. We didn't stay very long because it was a little bit cold and wanted to get to our lunch. I chided Lucas about dropping a M&M because leave no trace is very important. We met an interesting couple at a fork in the trail.. Luckily they let us go in front of them because the woman said they were slow and she likes to talk a lot. On Halfmoon Mountain, we found a good spot to enjoy the view and eat our lunch. Eric brought a sumptuous lunch but I fail to remember what it was. The sun felt good since the air temperature was in the 20s. I took the group picture and we headed back. It was a good hike, 16 miles in 8 hours.
