On a brisk November morning, we took a wonderful hike through the very scenic Rocky Ridge County Park. There were several excellent views of York County. One of the landmarks was the notorious Three Mile Island nuclear reactor, which is 9 miles north of the park.
Much of the trail was covered with leaves, which obscured the many rocks underneath. This made the terrain a bit challenging for a few of us. In addition, there were some steep uphill sections toward the end of the hike that tested our cardiovascular fitness.
After returning to the parking lot, most of us met at the White Rose Bar and Grill in historic downtown York. One of the nifty featured beverages was a do-it-yourself Bloody Mary. Also on the menu were several varieties of pit beef and barbeque sandwiches. I had their house burger, which was topped with ham, swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing. Yum!
Around 2:30pm, with full stomachs and a few aching muscles, we went our separate ways. Special thanks to John Fogle for organizing the carpool and to Amy Pickwick for taking some photos. And, of course, thanks to everyone else who traveled north of the Mason-Dixon line to hike with us. It was a pleasure for me to share a few of my hometown's hidden treasures, and I hope we can do it again sometime.
