Write Up:
I must say that Mother Nature whipped up a good one for us on Saturday. Kudos to all of you who woke up early! We left the carpool a little late, but that didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s enthusiasm as we headed west toward the wilds of Shenandoah. The trail head was 12 miles into the park from the Front Royal entrance and it only took one U-turn to find it. After a quick pit stop, we started on our 13.4-mile hike that first took us along the Appalachian Trail as it switched back and forth over the parkway (does anyone know why one drives on a parkway but parks in a driveway?). There were a couple of fairly good climbs going up Mt. Marshall with a great view of the valley below once we reached the top. That section of the AT afforded many great views and we often stopped to appreciate and take in the good weather. We ate lunch at a PATC shelter and amused ourselves by reading the log book of people who had journeyed through. The rest of the hike went without any trouble, and at the end of a long day we ate in Front Royal with a well deserved meal!
