Write Up:
I would like to thank everybody who came out for this hike. The carpool didn't get off to a good start. We got pulled over for speeding about 10 minutes after leaving the parking lot. Mike and his crew had trouble with my impeccable directions, but we steered him to the right place. Other than that, we made it to the trailhead uneventfully. It was a beautiful day with lots of sunshine, hardly a cloud in the sky, and it was warm. We hiked along the base of Massanutten Mountain near the New Market Gap. Even though the stream crossings weren't treacherous, I managed to slip off a rock and get a foot wet. Christine (knee strain) and Rita (no sleep) were tough and made it up the mountain. Along the ridgeline there were some nice overlooks. We went up to Bird Knob and weren't impressed. Then I took a wrong turn, we found a cool looking pond, a campsite, and a dead-end. We went back to the trail and took the proper turn. We returned to the overlook for lunch and enjoyed the birds flying around, the view of the Shenandoah Valley and the sky. We descended the mountain back to the parking lot. We stopped at Uncle Buck's in Luray for dinner/lunch. It was an interesting experience.
