Sat, Feb 19 2005 - Experts Only Training Hike (pre-MD Challenge) (View Original Event Details)|
|Participants:||Ellen Worthing, Jesse Allen, Carrie Graff, Colin Babb, Emilio Ungerfeld, Jeff Schneider, Andrew Singleton, Lora Polowczuk, Paul Shaklan, KC Yi|
We were able to start our hike promptly, as everyone showed up on time (Thanks guys!). It was a bit colder than expected but the sky was sunny and bright, and the group seemed very motivated.
Shortly into the hike we all noticed our water tubes were freezing, so those who had bladder packs had to forgo rehydration until we had warmed out tubes inside our jackets. Due to the fact this was a training hike we bypassed Annapolis Rocks and headed north at a pretty good speed.
First-time participant Andrew Singleton proved his hiking skillset by staying at the forefront of the group almost the entire time. The group reconvened at the 8-mile mark. Jesse kindly kept his GPS in full view of a satellite so we were able to determine exactly where the 8-mile mark was. It turned out to be a few feet off Wolfsville Road. KC's read 6.1 miles, and mine didn't read anything at all since I left mine in my pocket. I am sure Jesse's was correct when comparing his findings to my map, either that or we came a few feet short of our goal.
We ate lunch and then returned along the trail. We passed some trail maintainers who were trying to move the rocks off the trail; they had their work cut out for them, as there were a lot of big rocks.
Everyone made it off the trail by 4:30. We then headed over to Brewer's Alley in Frederick for a hot meal and social lubricants.
