The Holidays and cold weather did not keep the hikers away. We took on the Appalachian Trail 26 MOC'ers strong and finished the 11.6 miles way before dark.
The 8 A.M. carpool time didn't seem too bad for most of us, as last week we started at 7 A.M. By now, many folks knew about the Safeway that is on the way to the trail, and we stopped there for bagels and coffee. There was a foot-long sub that looked good for lunch, but it probably would've been a problem to fit in a pack.
After we arrived at the trailhead and checked out all that Gathland Park has to offer, we entered the forest and began the hike to Weverton. Since a couple people were running late, Jesse led an advance detail out to the Ed Garvey shelter, and we all eventually met there.
After a glorious lunch at the Weverton Cliffs overlook, we began the 5.8 miles back to Gathland. There was a little climb, so some of us actually broke a sweat. After the hike, most of us headed to Brewer's Alley in Frederick. Apparently, Frederick re-routed their exits or something, and many of us took a while to get to the restaurant. The leader would like to apologize for this.
Spread out over three tables in Brewer's Alley, we all seemed to enjoy out hot food and cold drinks. If there was a poll, Brewer's Alley would surely win as 'Best Post-Hike destination'.
Thanks to everyone for coming out and I hope you had a great time!
