With the weather outlook looking dismal, the calls and emails with cancellations started early. Just ten of us were brave enough to get wet this Sunday afternoon. Some got to the visitors' center early enough to get a chance to walk around the various exhibits on the wildlife of this area. We headed out a little after 1 p.m. toward the Fire Road Trail. We quickly found that the trail had been closed for hunting! This had not been the case when I scouted the trail a month earlier. The Fire Road Trail included about one-third of our total hike, so this made me a little worried. We walked back to the visitors' center to clarify which trails would be open today, and we quickly adjusted to a new route. We headed out the other side to the visitors' center to the Loop Trail and took a left onto the Laurel Trail. We passed the goose pond on our left and were disappointed by the lack of wildlife seen on such a gloomy day. At this point, the rain was very light. We trekked into the woods and took a left onto Cash Lake Trail. Over the bridge we took a bathroom pit stop and took some time for photos. The rain was starting to let up and the view of the lake was beautiful. We continued back on Cash Lake Trail toward the visitors' center, navigating through the wetlands. There were not many animals to be seen, but the views were nice. Thanks to Joanne, after returning to our cars, nine of us drove to Three Brothers for a late lunch of calzones on special. Very tasty!
