So much fun! Bowling, the great American past time, is the
great equalizer. No matter who you are, what you do, or how
much you have, there is always someone better than you at
bowling. A couple of hours at the Columbia Brunswick this
past weekend made this truth evident to all.
We started by introducing ourselves and admitting to our
respective levels of skill at bowling. Most had no trouble
admitting their incompetence in this regard. However, the
final scores would betray everyone's self-
We broke into two teams with nothing but pride on the line. As
usual, everyone started off slowly. It took a game for most
people to get warmed up. There were a couple of exceptions.
Both Christopher and Trent were pretty impressive from the
Interspersed among the actual bowling, MOCers had no
trouble exchanging ideas and getting to know one another.
That's kind of the point of this whole MOC exercise, isn't it?
Some MOCers treated themselves to extraordinarily greasy
pizza and/or mozzarella sticks. Some expressed concern
over the lack of access to beer. Some simply shook their
heads in disbelief as they stared at their pitiful
Others, however, would shock and awe both themselves and
those around them with their surprisingly high scores and
knack at picking up spares. Crystal was especially
impressive, turning her first game score of essentially nothing
into a world-beating 165 by the last game. Chris and Trent did
not disappoint with relatively high scores. Kate was also
making constant strikes. Well, pretty much everyone on that
team had personal bests. My own score is a secret I will carry
to the grave. I will say that I had two (count 'em, two) faults
when I crossed the line on the lane. It was funny seeing a big
"F" on my score sheet displayed above the lane for all to see.
I haven't gotten an "F" since high school.
Being used to seeing MOCers in boots and backpacks, it was
nice to see some in a different kind of footwear. It was also a
pleasure meeting some new (to me anyway) people. I hope
everyone had as much fun as I did.
